XPOLogistics

Portfolio of International XR Solutions
OVERVIEW

XPO’s brand image as a cutting-edge technology company was difficult to describe to the general public. Today, XR solutions are used internationally in conveying the scale, complexity, and people of XPO. Audiences can view XPO’s global operations, work with automated robots, or visit XPO’s IT offices.

ROLE

As an XR Software Engineer at XPO, I joined the team to specifically kickstart the company’s use of XR at investor relations events, recruiting conferences, and industry tradeshows. Using Unity and C#, I helped develop 360-degree warehouse tours, collaborative robot simulations, image-tracking AR apps, and more projects that drive both soft and hard ROI.

I have developed and optimized applications for PCVR, Oculus Go, Oculus Quest, and mobile AR devices. In addition to rapid prototyping and building development and design tools, I have also assisted with UX tasks such as storyboarding, user flows, user testing, and feature synthesis.

CHALLENEGES

Our goal in using XR technologies was to connect the general public with the XPO brand. For first-time VR users, this was a struggle, as users focused more on how to use hardware than enjoying the end experience. Using the Oculus Go and building interactions that fit the 3DOF headsets such as point-and-click, gaze response, and click-and-drag, we could easily create portable solutions while shortening the learning curve.

In using the Oculus Quest, we were careful to create experiences that were physically intensive while being respectful of the amount of physical space used. We wanted experiences on the Quest to also respect the user as a human, and thus focused on familiar human-based interactions such as grabbing objects and walking within a room-space.

XR FOR THE NEXT-GENERATION

To make XPO’s XR products more accessible and approachable, the team built a 360-degree VR experience to present the warmth of working in XPO’s Boston IT office. We also developed complementary AR experiences that enhanced existing recruiting promotional in real-time on the career-fair floor.
