Draft360
OVERVIEW
With Draft360, now everyone can create and share 360 ideas. Using webXR and a pair of nReal glasses, our team developed a tool in 72 hours that allowed users to conceptualize 360 storyboards. Winner of “Best of AR” and “Tools” at the 2020 MIT Reality Hack. Showcased at AWE 2020.
ROLE
I was the nReal and Unity Developer on the team responsible for adapting our webXR product onto the nReal glasses. The end solution used the phone connected to the nReal headset as a camera, microphone, and controller, which allowed users to snap photos of their environment, and then bring these photos into a virtual environment visible through the nReal headset. Users could spatially storyboard their 360 ideas by importing images, dragging them to specific spatial locations, and even adding voice notes to annotate actions occurring within the storyboard.
CHALLENGES & PROCESS
At the 2020 MIT Reality Hack, teams created a project around the theme ‘Utopia’. Pulling from our own experiences as developers, designers, and animators, we built a tool to take the frustration out of creating and sharing 360 ideas.
Our main challenge was to make the complex process of 360 storyboarding accessible to non-developers. After intense brainstorming and snacking, we decided to focus on webXR as a platform to support our product vision. We also decided to work on a complementary product that used cutting-edge XR devices. We experimented with the nReal glasses and realized there was serious potential in using the devices’ microphone, camera, and gyroscope functionalities to provide a beneficial user-centric experience.
Or end solution consisted of a public webXR app and a complimentary AR app built for the nReal glasses. View the official Draft360 website.
